The screen filming highlighted real-life stories of women fighting for their rights in Russia, particularly in relation to their right to be a mother.

On Wednesday 1 November, the School of Social, Historical, and Political Studies organised an event that featured the screening of the documentary film: Punished for Being a Mother (2021), a 37-minute exploration directed by Lidia Mikhalchenko and Katya Dikova. The film focuses on the personal narratives of women fighting for their motherhood, shedding light on their tenacity and resilience in the face of adversity, as well as systemic violations of women's rights in Russia's North Caucasus. Following the screening, a conversation with Lidia Mikhalchenko herself, a journalist with more than 15 years of experience in the North Caucasus, was held.

This event is a part of the school's academic outreach efforts. Anna Kuteleva on behalf of the School commented that: "As educators and researchers, our mission goes beyond simply analysing government structures. We aim to explore the complex dynamics that shape our political landscapes. We encourage our students to think critically, globally, and on a grand scale when it comes to modern democracy and global citizenship. Gender equality and women's rights hold a special place in both our curriculum."

Around the world, the rise of anti-feminist politics and movements that aim to roll back the hard-fought gains in women's rights is evident and prominent. The situation in Russia's North Caucasus is sadly not an isolated case. Anti-feminist sentiments and actions are becoming more prevalent in various societies, pushing against the progress made in the fight for gender equality. It is essential to recognise that gender equality is not only a local or regional issue but a global concern. The struggles faced by the women in Russia's North Caucasus mirror the challenges women encounter in many parts of the world.

The international community, including people like our staff and students, has a vital role to play in addressing these issues. By fostering dialogue, sharing knowledge, and standing together in support of women's rights, we can work towards a more equitable and just world. Documentaries like Punished for Being a Mother provide a starting point, bringing attention to the urgent need to address systemic violations of women's rights, not just in Russia's North Caucasus but everywhere. It is a call to action for all of us to continue working towards a more inclusive and equitable future for women worldwide.
