Ceremony flags the importance of LGBTQAI+ History Month

University of Wolverhampton staff joined City of Wolverhampton Council to flag the importance of LGBTQAI+ recently. 

Sarah Schofield, Chaplain, Clare Dickens, MBE, Academic Lead for Mental Health and Wellbeing and Adam Vasco, Director of Diversity & Inclusion in Professional Practice joined Mayor of Wolverhampton, Dr Michael Hardacre, Ms Lynn Plant, Mayoress, Councillors and Methodist minister. 

Adam said: “I’m a proud ally to the LGBTQAI+ community. As we raise this flag here in the heart of the city to mark the beginning of this important History Month, we do so not only in celebration but in solemn recognition of the journey that has brought us here. 

“This month is a time for reflection, for education, and for action. It's a time to look back at the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of those who fought for the rights and recognition the LGBTQAI+ community enjoys today. But it's also a time to acknowledge that this fight is far from over. 

“Despite the progress we've made, the challenges facing LGBTQAI+ individuals remain stark and widespread. From discrimination and social stigma to inequalities in health, employment, and education, the barriers to full equality are still all too real. This month, and every month, we must commit to learning from the past to shape a more inclusive, equitable future. 

“As an ally, I recognise the importance of listening to and amplifying LGBTQAI+ voices, of standing up against injustice, and of working tirelessly to dismantle the structures that perpetuate inequality. Our role is to support, to empower, and to ensure that every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, feels valued, safe, and respected. 

“As we raise this flag, let it be a symbol of our collective unwavering support for the LGBTQAI+ community. Let it remind us of our responsibility to fight for equality and justice. And let it inspire us to carry forward the spirit of love, resilience, and solidarity that defines the LGBTQAI+ movement. 

“I urge each one of us to use this month as an opportunity to educate ourselves, to engage in meaningful conversations, to truly listen and to take action that supports the LGBTQAI+ community. Let's work together to build a world where everyone can live authentically and without fear. Being an ally is a verb, we are duty bound to ensure raising of flags are not performative but a symbol of active allyship and change. I know the Wolverhampton community is committed to this and can assure you as proud members of the community that as a university we are too.”
