Mission Transmission

Mission Transmission is an award-winning interactive lecture that uses audience participation, exciting and sometimes disgusting on-stage science demonstrations to introduce participants to the world of a microbiologist and the science of microbiology. The main focus of this show is to explore the job role and introduce key concepts in the understanding of microbial diseases, such as the different ways in which disease is transmitted and the importance of handwashing for disease control in the community.

This show is suitable for upper KS2, KS3, KS4 and KS5

All shows are 50 minutes in duration, however, can cater to large audiences depending on the suitability of the location.

This session links in with the national curriculum in the following ways

  • Keeping the body healthy.
  • How the body might be damaged.
  • Asking relevant questions and using different types of scientific enquirers to answer them.
  • Using straightforward scientific evidence to answer questions or to support their findings.

  • Communicable diseases including sexually transmitted infections in humans (including HIV/AIDs)
  • Non-communicable diseases
  • Understand the differences and role of bacteria, viruses and fungi as pathogens in animals and plants.
  • Understand the body's defences against pathogens and the role of the immune system against disease.
  • Understand how to reduce and prevent the spread of infectious diseases in animals and plants.

  • Develop an interest in and enthusiasm for the subject, including developing an interest in further study and careers associated with the subject

  • This show will generate a socially constructive environment that will promote direct incidental learning opportunities through informal science education in the microbiology subject area that is directly relevant to and supports GCSE and A-Level biology curriculum, which may lead to increased attainment.
  • Introduction to the role of the individual in public health and the social responsibility participants have to others.
  • Introduction to the aspirational job role of the Microbiologist and the importance of study in higher education to achieve the role and others in the healthcare sector.
