History

Set in the centre of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ironbridge is a large village just a short distance away from Telford. The village is home to an actual iron bridge erected in 1779 by Abraham Darby and the area itself, coined the Valley of Invention, is rich in history dating back to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. 

The area has many museums and historical places of interest to explore, including Blists Hill Victorian Town, Enginuity which is a fun hands-on science and engineering experience, Jackfield Tile Museum, and The Old Furnace. When you’re ready for a rest from all that exploring, there are independent shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants, including the Coracle Micropub right in the heart of the village.  

Hop on the train into historic Shrewsbury and pay a visit to Shrewsbury Castle. Situated in the heart of town and a short walk from the train station, the castle has over 1000 years of history and offers a bird's eye view of the city. It’s the perfect way to explore local history and check out the stunning grounds.  

The Castle also hosts many events including open-air theatre performances and food festivals – so keep an eye on their events page. 

Benthall Hall, located just outside Telford in Broseley, is a stunning 16th century stone country house set in extensive grounds and woodland, with a footpath leading to Ironbridge Gorge.  

Home to the Benthall family for almost 500 years but now under the custodianship of The National Trust, this property built in 1553, is a great opportunity to learn more about the local area and to get out in nature.  

Weston Park just outside Telford is home to a large stately home and over 1,000 acres of historic Capability Brown parkland. As well as sprawling landscapes, there are delicately manicured walled gardens and perfumed rose gardens that are perfect for wandering while exploring nature.

We also recommend heading to The Granary where they serve everything from afternoon tea to lunch light bites.  

There is also a full calendar of events that takes place throughout the year including ’Enchanted Weston’ and Camp Bestival, a three-day music festival.  

Just a short walk up from Shrewsbury train station you will find the Shropshire Archives. Here you will have the chance to research and study a range of historical and important documents, including maps, building control applications, trade directories, estate surveys and insurance records.
