CLASS OF 2022: Bashir builds on the foundations for a career in architecture

07/09/2022

Bashir Aminu, 24 from Nigeria, has been building on the foundations for a career in architecture with extended degree studies at the University of Wolverhampton’s School of Architecture and Built Environment.

Bashir started at the University by studying for a Foundation degree in Engineering before moving on to an Undergraduate degree in Architecture and then completing a Master’s degree in Architecture – graduating in Class of 2022.

He said: “When I was growing up I was inspired by my dad who is a Quantity Surveyor. Right from a young age I would engage with his projects and go out on site with him, and I also had the opportunity to travel around the world and could see the massive buildings which also really inspired me.

“After doing a lot of research, I realised that the University of Wolverhampton was a great place to study because it specialises in Architecture as well as focusing on regeneration and brownfield remediation – turning waste ground into relivable spaces. I also had some local ties in Wolverhampton so decided to study here.

“Studying at the University gave me a real insight into what real life work is like.  We engaged with industry partners and worked with clients such as Sandwell Council on live projects.  Everything that we studied at University related to the Wolverhampton Action Plan, covering sustainability and regeneration and, with the National Brownfield Institute next door, this really gave me an insight and in-depth knowledge of Architecture.”

Bashir studied for his Master’s degree in the new School of Architecture and Built Environment based at the University’s Construction Super Campus in Springfield.

“The building is superb,” he said: “You can see the retro fit between old and new and it’s a pioneering building in the Midlands. It shows how you can revive a derelict building and bring it back to life. The University is preaching what they teach and it’s an amazing building to be studying in.”

Bashir is currently completing an internship with a building company which is aiming to realise the value of its historical buildings.

Bashir said: “I’m interested in housing, it’s one of the issues that’s currently very important, it’s a necessity, related to our life day in and out. I’m interested in looking at residential schemes and housing and I want to provide sustainable solutions to mitigate the current housing problem in the UK and globally.

“The future looks very promising for me now and my parents are very proud, they have sponsored me over this period and I’m very grateful to them for that.”

Bashir intends to work towards his Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) accreditation and aims to become an architect in the near future.

Graduates are encouraged to keep in touch with the Alumni team and take advantage of a range of benefits and support on offer to them including a discount for Postgraduate study and opportunities to benefit from mentoring, volunteering and career advice.
