Advice on disposing of IT equipment

If you are a member of staff and have unused IT equipment, you can either have it reused by the University or safely disposed of.

Please raise a call for support using the IT portal (you will need to log in).

Reusing equipment:
If the equipment still works well, you can ask for it to be reused. The Digital Services team will check it and take it away if it is suitable.

Disposing of equipment:
If the equipment needs to be thrown away, the Estates and Facilities team will arrange this through the approved WEEE recycling service.

The University must follow WEEE rules. This means electrical equipment must be stored, collected, recycled, and disposed of separately from other waste. The University must also keep proof that the equipment was handled safely and in an environmentally friendly way.

Our WEEE partner:
The University uses a licensed local company to deal with all electrical waste. All IT equipment must be disposed of through this partner. They make sure all data is fully removed from the equipment and take legal responsibility for it after collection.

Working equipment may be repaired and reused, often by charities in the UK or in developing countries. Equipment that cannot be reused is broken down and recycled where possible. This service is free to the University.

Staff are not allowed to take old University equipment home or give it to others outside the University.

If the University does not follow these rules, it could face large fines.
